Railway Air Services - Cardiff
Cardiff was serviced by the Pengham Moors Municipal airport which was two miles east of the city It appears the first airline user of Pengham Moor was Great Western Railway who inaugurated a service on the 12th April 1933 linking Cardiff with Teignmouth and Plymouth using the Westland Wessex G-AAGW leased from Imperial Airways. Possibly, Norman Edgar & Co used this site when they started an air ferry service to Bristol on the 26th September 1932 with the Fox Moth G-ABYO. This company changed its name to Norman Edgar (Western Airways) in September 1933. RAS started services from the 7th May. On the 20th August Cardiff was on the route from Birmingham to Plymouth which was the only route that day which the RAS enjoyed uninterrupted service. So, Cardiff received mail from Birmingham on the Outward journey and mail from Plymouth and Teignmouth on the inward journey. There was also a link service between Cardiff and Bristol which was run by the Bristol firm of Norman Edgar Ltd. The main service from Glasgow stopped at Manchester and there was no mail from the Northern cities. The link service seems only to have operated in one direction (Cardiff - Bristol) on that day. On the 21st a full service took place including the link service from Cardiff to Bristol. Flown 20th - Liverpool, Bristol, Birmingham, Plymouth Flown 21st - Glasgow, Belfast, Manchester, Isle of Man, Southampton, Cowes (21st postmarks) Part flown - Glasgow, Belfast, Manchester, Isle of Man, Southampton, Cowes (20th postmarks) Teignmouth (Field states fully flown which is incorrect), 20th Surface - London.
