Railway Air Services - Manchester
Manchester was served by Barton Airport in Salford which is about 5 miles south of Manchester. Wyhthenshawe was the first airport in Manchester but Barton became the first Municipal Airport in the UK to be awarded an Air Ministry license on 22nd April 1929. The airport officially opened on 1 January 1930. It was the venue on the 29th May 1931 for the C.D. Barnard Air Tours ‘Tour of the UK’ and on the 10th June 1932 for Alan Cobham’s National Aviation Day UK Display Tour. RAS used the airport from 20th August 1934. Ringway became Manchester’s main airport but Barton is still open today as Manchester’s City Airport and Heliport. On the 20th August Manchester received mail from Glasgow, Belfast and the Isle of Man. Manchester was on the main route from Glasgow to London. The main route was cancelled due to bad weather and the plane coming up from London was abandoned at Birmingham. So Manchester has no outward mail on the 20th. On the 21st there was a full service. Flown 21st - Liverpool, Glasgow, Belfast, Isle of Man, Birmingham, Cardiff, London, Bristol, Southampton and Cowes (21st postmark). Part flown - Cardiff, Plymouth (Again Redgrove and Field differ, Feild says surface on 20th) Surface 20th- Liverpool, Glasgow, Belfast, Isle of Man, Birmingham, Cardiff, Teignmouth, London, Bristol, Southampton and Cowes
